San Luis Cruises Past Gila Ridge in 12-1 Victory
The San Luis Sidewinders came out swinging in the bottom half of the first in their home opener to the 2020 campaign. They sent 10 batters to the plate scoring four runs off Gila Ridge ace Dale Tshigg. After back-to-back singles to open the frame, three hole hitter 2023 Jasser Armenta singled in a pair to get the scoring started. Armenta would finish the day with 3 RBIs and will be a freshman to watch moving forward.
San Luis Starter 2020 LHP Daniel Zaragoza gave up a lead off single to 2021 Blake Avila, but settled in to retire the next 11 Hawks batters. The uncommitted lefty did a good job of keeping the Gila Ridge lineup hitters away from hard contact by mixing speeds and arm slots effectively with a fastball 79-82 mph and a slider with decent depth at 77-78 mph.
The Sidewinders really started to pour it on in the fourth as the Hawks recorded the first out, but their relievers walked five straight hitters to open the flood gates as they saw five Sidewinders touch home plate pushing the score to 12-1, good enough to end the game in a mercy rule.
Both teams will be on the road today as they will participate in the Kingman Invite in Northwest Arizona.
