MVP Florida 2023 Summer Tryouts Standouts Part 1

From December 17th-18th, MVP Florida held their 2023 Summer Tryouts which took place at Shorecrest Prep in St. Petersburg, FL. Over the two-day stretch players went through a pro-style workout on Saturday followed by game action on Sunday. With 100+ players in attendance ranging from the 2024-2027 classes, there were plenty of players who stood out throughout the event. 

Below is Part 1 of the standouts highlighted from the event that made an impact on our scouting staff and will be strong follows moving forward as we head into the spring season.

2024 C Cole Sofge (Largo HS, FL)

Uncommitted. Was one of the top standouts at the event, most notably from the offensive side from both sides of the plate. Physical, athletic frame with a noticeably stronger lower half. Displayed present pull side juice from the left side while he showed off a line drive approach from the right side. Fast, strong hands through the zone. From behind the plate he showcased an above average and accurate arm with pop times in the 1.92-1.99 seconds range. Strong follow.

2024 1B Matthew Nguyen (Calvary Christian HS, FL)

Uncommitted. Present strength throughout which translates offensively. Level to uphill path through the zone that finds the barrel for loud contact from the left side. Quick, strong hands. During batting practice he sent multiple pitches deep into right field, including several that went over the wall. Middle of the order type hitter suited to drive in runs. 

2025 C JJ Baysinger (Seminole HS, FL)

Uncommitted. Athletic frame with a stronger lower half. Offensively he barreled it up for hard contact multiple times during his batting practice rounds from the right side, driving the ball deep into left-center field. Strong arm from behind the plate as well with pop times in the 1.99-2.05 range.

2026 RHP/IF Donovan Fox (Northside Christian, FL)

Uncommitted. Tall, athletic frame with long legs. Will continue to become more physical. On the mound he featured a fastball up to 79 mph, pitching at 76-78. More in the tank, quick arm. Also flashed a curveball in the mid 60s with depth, throwing it for strikes. Above average arm, topping out at 80 mph on his throws across the diamond. Strong follow. 

2026 OF Anthony Bendever (Seminole HS, FL)

Uncommitted. Present athleticism. Stood out when he displayed a strong arm from right field during defensive drills. His throws showed accuracy and carry. Offensively he works to drive the ball out in front back up the middle and to the pull side. Quick hands from the right side. 

2027 IF Matthew Ray (N/A, FL)

String follow moving forward as he has a tall, projectable frame with present athleticism. Shows natural instincts. During game play he manipulated the barrel to go down in the zone and drive a ball into left field for a single. Stole 2B and 3B during the next at-bats. Loose, fast hands and shows confidence in the box. Above average arm across the diamond as well. 

2027 IF Ian Dunn (N/A, FL)

Athletic frame that will continue to fill out which will translate to jumps in power offensively. Showed above average bat speed from the right side during his batting practice rounds, driving the ball with intent back up the middle and deep into left field. Stays short and direct to the ball.
