CBU Summer 2021 Tryouts Standouts Part 1

CBU Summer 2021 Tryouts Standouts Part 1

This past weekend one of the newly formed organizations in CBU (combination of Cannons Baseball Academy, Baseball University, and 5 Star National Miami) held their Summer 2021 Tryouts at historic Terry Park in Fort Myers, FL. This event featured 220+ players from the 2022-2025 classes from all over the state of Florida. Pitchers threw light bullpens on Friday night followed by a pro-style workout for position players on Saturday and game action on Sunday.

Our scouting staff came away extremely impressed by the level of talent across the board so for that reason we will be splitting up our Standouts breakdown into three parts. Below is Part 1 of our breakdown with reports/notes on each. Please make sure you are following us on our social media outlets as well as we post highlights, clips, and announcements on past and upcoming events.

2022 RHP Evan Dobias (American Heritage HS, FL)
Virginia commit. Tall, lean frame with room to fill out which should translate into additional upticks in velocity. Mostly sat 87-88 mph with his fastball that had run, mixing in a 79-81 mph changeup and 73-74 mph curveball with tighter spin. Ball jumps out of his hand and can really fill up the strike zone.

2022 OF Freddy Oquendo (Miami Christian, FL)
FIU commit. Above average athlete who showed off some big time tools over the weekend. Started off the day by clocking in at an event best 6.50 seconds for his 60 yard dash time. Offensively, he displays present bat speed from the left side with loose, quick hands that find the barrel often. The ball really jumps off the bat and he drove one straight over the center field wall during one of his final swings during his batting practice round. Easy power. Smooth, athletic actions up the middle and moves freely with accurate throws to the bag.

2022 RHP JT Quinn (Berkeley Prep, FL)
Ole Miss commit. Extra large frame that stands at 6-foot-6 with plenty of room to still fill out. Long limbs. Ball comes out of his hand easy with some extension out in front on his delivery. Mostly sat 87-89 mph with his fastball, touching 90 with a loose, easy working arm. Also mixed in a 75-76 mph curveball and an 80-81 mph changeup. There’s more in the tank as he continues to become more physical. Very strong follow.

2025 RHP/MIF Cal Johnson (N/A, FL)
Lean, athletic frame that projects to fill out with physicality. During bullpens he featured a loose, quick arm and showed a feel for all his pitches. Ball comes out of his hand easy, topping out at 79 mph. Defensively he fielded the ball under control and with confidence up the middle during defensive drills. Ranges freely to his left and right, topped out at 78 mph across the diamond. Johnson is also a switch hitter who drove multiple line drives back up the middle from the right side and then showed pull side pop with several balls driven deep into right field from the left side. Really impressive two-way player to follow.

2024 C Zain Diaco (American Heritage HS, FL)
Uncommitted. Athletic frame, strong lower half. Had one of the better all around performances for his grad class throughout the weekend. Aggressive hitter who really looks to drive the ball with intent, make hard contact. Produced multiple hard line drives into the gaps with some present power. Easy bat speed through the zone from the left side. Also an above average defender behind the plate with strong throws down to second with pop times in the 1.92-1.94 seconds range.

2022 RHP Cole Derks (St. Andrews HS, FL)

Also mixed in an above average changeup with fade at 79-81mph and a 73-74 mph slider that showed depth. Pounds the zone with a loose, easy arm. There’s more in there and expect to see a jump in velocity fairly soon. Strong follow.

2024 MIF Kaden Foran (Calvary Christian Academy, FL)
Uncommitted. Really stood out offensively as he took an impressive couple rounds of batting practice driving the ball deep into the gaps with loud, hard contact. Some present power as well with balls drive deep to the wall. Hands are fast through the zone and stays balanced throughout his swing.

2024 MIF Alejandro Vazquez (Calvary Christian Academy, FL)
Uncommitted. Athletic frame with a strong lower half. Was one of the top standouts for his class as he made an impact all over the field. Showed above average actions up the middle and topped out at 83 mph on his throws across the diamond during defensive drills. Stood out offensively as well with quick hands and a present feel for the barrel. Laced line drives all over the field during batting practice. Strong follow.

2023 OF Tugg Hollandsworth (Calvary Christian Academy, FL)
Uncommitted. Physical frame with a strong lower half. Above average athlete with great bloodlines. Showed present pull-side pop while also working gap-to-gap offensively with above average bat speed from the left side. There’s more power to come as he continues to fill out his frame. Topped out at 88 mph on his throws from right field during defensive drills with throws ranging from 85-87.

2023 MIF Edward Paneque (Archbishop McCarthy, FL)
Uncommitted. Lean, athletic frame. Paneque took one of the best rounds of batting practice for his class as he consistently barreled it up, spraying the ball all over the field. The hands are quick through the zone and the swing is fluid. Showed present juice as well when he drove one over the left-center field wall during his first round. There’s more power to come as he continues to fill out.

2023 1B James Hankerson Jr. (Berkeley Prep, FL)
Uncommitted. Big, strong frame. Impending presence in the batter’s box. Put on quite a show from the left side during batting practice as he drove multiple balls over the right field wall. Also crushed one off the top of the center field wall. Also showed present power from the right side with loud, hard contact. More fluid from the left side. Suited to drive in dozens of runs in the heart of the order with big power.

2022 IF Jonathan Gonzalez (Miami Christian, FL)
Uncommitted. Tall, athletic frame that has become noticeably more physical. Had a strong couple rounds of batting practice as he drove several to the left field wall along with multiple line drives up the middle. Really works in rhythm and looks to implement his strong lower half into his swing for additional power. Above average actions with an accurate and on line arm across the diamond.

2022 IF Owen McElfatrick (Berkeley Prep, FL)
Northwestern commit. Present athleticism with a strong lower half. Plays with a high level of energy. During game play he laced one deep over the center fielder’s head for a triple and then took home with aggressive running at the end. Ball really jumps off the bat and is suited for a spot near the top of the order.

2022 LHP Alexander Llinas (St. Thomas Aquinas HS, FL)
Uncommitted. Stood out during bullpens on Friday night as he sat 83-84 mph, touching 85 with his fastball that showed life. Also mixed in a 75-76 mph changeup and 69-70 mph curveball with depth. Strong lower half, works down in the zone and shows a feel for all three of his pitches.

2022 LHP Jack Spinnato (Clearwater Central Catholic, FL)
Uncommitted. Lean frame with some room to still fill out. Featured a quick arm on the hill with more in the tank as he sat 81-83 mph, touching 84 with his fastball. Also mixed in a 12/6 curveball at 66-68 mph with hard break. Very comfortable throwing the breaking ball and works quickly.
