Witherspoon Ks 10 as Fletcher Moves to 3-0 in 9-3 Victory

Witherspoon Ks 10 as Fletcher Moves to 3-0 in 9-3 Victory

Last night the Ponte Vedra Sharks visited the Fletcher Senators in a back and forth matchup early on, but ultimately the home team would pull away and secure a 9-3 victory over their division foe.

2022 RHP Malachi Witherspoon (Fletcher HS, FL) started for the Senators and while a pair of runs were scored against him in the 1st, he was dominant the rest of his outing and would earn the win. The Jacksonville recruit touched 94 mph with his fastball early on before pitching the rest of the way at 90-93. Also featured an above average slider at 79-82 mph with hard bite and a 83-84 mph changeup he threw occasionally. Really got into a groove after the 1st inning and induced lots of swings and misses on his way to 10 strikeouts in five innings pitched.

Offensively, most of the runs the Senators scored came by way of an error, passed ball, and walks. However, they did get some key contributions later on in the game from 2022 MIF Kyson Witherspoon (Daytona State College commit) 2022 IF Ethan Dearen, 2023 IF Grant Tucker, and 2022 RHP/IF Malachi Witherspoon who combined for four RBIs.

2023 RHP Adam Fordenbacher (Fletcher HS, FL) came in for relief of Witherspoon and while he did allow a run on one hit in the seventh, he struck out four over two innings pitched and secured the victory for the Senators.

With the win the Senators moved to 3-0 while the Sharks fell to 1-2.

Player of the Game

2022 RHP/IF Malachi Witherspoon (Fletcher HS, FL)
Jacksonville commit. Was dominant in his outing, striking out 10 and earning the win over five innings of work. Physical, athletic frame at 6-2/215 and the ball really jumps out of his hand. Ran his fastball up to 94 mph and at times over 2600 RPM while mostly pitching at 90-93. Also mixed in a nasty, hard slider at 79-82 mph that had 2900+ RPM and induced lots of off-balance swings and misses. Mixed in an 83-85 mph changeup with fade as well. Really got into a groove and pounded the strike zone. Very strong draft follow the rest of the spring.
