Maroudis and Peterson Shut Down the Crusaders in Calvary’s 10-1 Win

Maroudis and Peterson Shut Down the Crusaders in Calvary’s 10-1 Win

Last night the Calvary Christian Warriors visited the Tampa Catholic Crusaders in a tightly contested matchup early on as the visiting Warriors were clinging to a 1-0 lead through four innings. However in the top of the fifth inning the visiting team would really start to roll on offense and paired with the strong pitching performances of 2023 RHP Landen Maroudis and 2023 RHP Liam Peterson, eventually pull away in a 10-1 victory.

Warriors starter in 2023 RHP Landen Maroudis earned the win in his outing, going four strong and allowing only one run with four strikeouts. The NC State commit featured a fastball up to 93 mph and mostly pitched at 90-92 while mixing in a 74-78 mph curveball that really started to work later on in his outing, getting some big swings and misses. Maroudis also made his impact felt offensively, going 3-for-5 and driving in three runs in the process.

With the score still 1-0 in favor of the visiting team through four innings of play, the Warriors finally broke through in the fifth as an RBI groundout followed by an RBI single by 2023 RHP/DH Liam Peterson pushed it to 3-0. 2022 MIF Matt Rose delivered his first run scoring hit of the day as the USF commit drove a ball up the middle for an RBI single, making it 4-0.

2023 RHP Liam Peterson came in for relief of Maroudis and dominated the Crusaders lineup the rest of the way, allowing no base runners and striking out eight batters in three innings pitched. The Florida commit pounded the strike zone and went right after the batter, featuring a 90-93 mph fastball that had plenty of life. Also mixed in an 84-85 mph changeup along with a 74-76 mph curveball that really complimented the fastball.

The Warriors weren’t finished on offense and tacked on five more runs in the top of the 6th as 2024 C Andrew Tess delivered an RBI single followed by 2023 RHP/MIF Landen Maroudis who ripped a ball up the middle for an RBI single. 2022 MIF Matt Rose then came through again, lacing a ball deep over the center fielder’s head for an RBI double to make it 9-1. Maroudis would come up again the following inning and drive another pitch into left field for an RBI double making it 10-1.

2023 RHP Liam Peterson put away the Crusaders lineup in order in the bottom of the seventh, striking out the last batter to end the game. With the win the Warriors moved to 4-0 on the season while the Crusaders fell to 3-2.

Players of the Game

2023 RHP/MIF Landen Maroudis (Calvary Christian HS, FL)
NC State commit. Tall, projectable frame standing at 6-foot-3, 185 pounds. Earned the win in his outing where he displayed a 90-93 mph fastball with run while mixing in an above average curveball at 75-78 mph with depth. Loose, quick arm with plenty of athleticism and more in tank. Offensively, he went 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs which included an RBI double along with a stolen base. Gap to-gap hitter who still has more power to come. Very strong follow and shows legit two-way potential.

2023 RHP Liam Peterson (Calvary Christian HS, FL)
Florida commit. Was extremely impressive in relief work last night, striking out eight in three innings of work with no hits or walks allowed. Ball really jumps out of his hand. Long, tall frame at 6-5/200 that projects and features a 90-93 mph fastball with plenty of life. Mostly in the 2450-2500 RPM range. Also mixed in an 84-85 mph changeup with fade and a 74-76 mph curveball at 2600+ RPM. Got a high percentage of swings and misses. Very strong follow.

2022 MIF Matt Rose (Calvary Christian HS, FL)
USF commit. Currently stands at 5-foot-10, 170 pounds on a compact, athletic frame. Has consistently demonstrated the ability to deliver run scoring hits and showed that again last night. Went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs which included a run scoring double that was laced deep over the center fielder’s head. Quick, loose hands offensively with plenty of confidence in the box. Above average defender who makes the plays up the middle as well.

2024 C Andrew Tess (Calvary Christian HS, FL)
Uncommitted. Currently stands at 5-foot-11, 170 pounds with a lean, athletic frame. Still room to fill out which should translate to additional power offensively. During one of his at-bats he ripped a ball back up the middle for a two-run single and extended the Warriors lead. Top of the order hitter with above average bat speed from the right side, some present feel for the barrel. Strong follow.
