Hawks Earn First Win at Johnny Goodrich Field 8-1 Over Seabreeze

Last night the Seabreeze Sandcrabs visited the Spruce Creek Hawks in the second game of the Creek Beach Bash which saw the home team come away with the 8-1 victory. Along with it being opening night for the home team, former Coach Johnny Goodrich was honored with a ceremony naming the field after him. Several key members of the school including current coach Matt Cleveland spoke on his behalf and thanked him for the success he had brought to the program.

Spruce Creek jumped out to an early lead and were ahead 3-0 through the fifth inning after taking advantage of some errors in the field. 2022 LHP Austin Asbill (Spruce Creek HS, FL) was impressive on the mound as he consistently shut down the Seacrabs in order, mostly by way of the strikeout with eight in four innings pitched. The uncommitted senior featured a low 80s fastball and consistently worked down in the zone, throwing a high percentage of strikes.

2023 OF Brody Pezza (Seabreeze HS, FL) finally got things going for the visiting team in the top of the sixth as he laced a ball to left field that would bring in the first run of the game for the Seacrabs. The Hawks answered though in the bottom of the sixth, plating another five runs which included run scoring hits by 2023 C/1B Justin Minaberry and 2022 IF Aaron Holtz, making it 8-1.

2023 RHP/SS Drew Hurst (Spruce Creek HS, FL) finished off the Seacrabs in the top of the seventh to preserve the victory for the home team and start the season with a win.

Players of the Game

2023 OF Brody Pezza (Seabreeze HS, FL)
Uncommitted. Lean, projectable frame with above average athleticism. Went 2-for-3 on the night out of the 3-spot, showing the ability to work the count and foul off the tough pitches. Loose, quick hands and was able to manipulate the barrel and drive the ball where it was in the zone. Included a single up the middle and a double that was laced into left-center field. Heads up runner on the base paths. Strong follow.

2022 LHP Austin Asbill (Spruce Creek Has, FL)
Uncommitted. Lean, projectable frame with room to fill out. Worked in the low 80s with his fastball and threw a high percentage of strikes, getting the batter behind in the count early and often. More in there. Hides the ball well and worked low and away in the zone. Generated lots of swings and misses. Tossed four innings with eight strikeouts, allowing only two hits and walking none.

2022 OF Trent Godawa (Spruce Creek HS, FL)
Uncommitted. Lean, athletic frame. Above average bat speed out of the leadoff spot, looks to drive the ball gap-to-gap, jump on the fastball. Went 2-for-3 on the night which included two runs scored and a stolen base. Above average runner with more power to come as he continues to fill out his frame.
