Holland Homers, Rudd Deals as Mosley Punches their Ticket to States

Last night the Ponte Vedra Sharks hosted the Mosley Dolphins in a regional final matchup that would ultimately be decided in five innings due to a mercy rule. The Dolphins offense was ready from the jump as they hammered away with 11 hits, plating thirteen runs in their 13-1 victory.

The Dolphins got on the board early with two runs in the first, giving 2021 LHP/OF Jaden Rudd all he would need to earn the win on the night. The Notre Dame baseball commit went right after the Sharks’ lineup, featuring an 87-89 mph fastball that touched 90 along with a nasty 73-75 mph curveball that generated lots of swings and misses.

In the top of the 2nd, 2022 OF Rock Holland blasted a solo home run over the center field wall for the Dolphins, extending their lead to 3-0. Holland had a huge night at the plate, going 4-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. 2021 C Coleman Rowan (Lipscomb commit) kept the offense rolling for the Dolphins in the 2nd and delivered a double down the left field line, scoring two and pushing their lead to 5-0.

The Dolphins would tack on another run in the 2nd and another one in the 3rd, making it 7-0 through three. Meanwhile, Rudd continued to keep the Sharks lineup silent.

In the top of the 4th the Dolphins struck get again as 2021 SS Ethan Campbell (Jacksonville commit) laced a ball to the center field wall for a two-run double. A wild pitch scored another run, making it 11-0 and giving the Dolphins a commanding lead.

The Sharks were able to scratch a run across in the bottom of the 4th to make it 11-1, but 2022 OF Rock Holland stepped up again for the Dolphins in the top of the 5th and delivered a two-run double to push the lead back to double digits, making it 13-1.

2022 RHP Blake Thomas came in for relief and would get the final three outs for the Dolphins in the bottom of the 5th, ending the game 13-1 via a mercy rule. With the win, they are headed to Fort Myers for a chance at the State title.

Top Performers

2021 LHP/OF Jaden Rudd (Mosley HS, FL)
Notre Dame commit. Earned the win with a strong effort on the mound, going four innings and striking out five while allowing only a single run. Mostly sat 87-89 mph with his fastball, touching 90 with late movement early on before settling in a 86-88 the rest of the way, reaching back and hitting 89, 90 on strikeouts. Also mixed in an above average curveball at 73-75 mph with hard break and depth, generating multiple swings and misses. Works from a deliberate, over the top windup and stays balanced throughout, keeping hitters somewhat off-balanced. Commands the mound and goes right after the hitter. Also chipped in offensively where he singled and drove in a run. Top of the lineup hitter with fast hands from the left side that finds the barrel. Takes a tough at-bat. Rudd is the type of ballplayer that comes to the field every day and you know you’re going to get his best effort out of him. Strong follow.

2022 OF Rock Holland (Mosley HS, FL)
Uncommitted. Currently stands at 6-foot-1, 185 pounds on an athletic frame with present strength throughout. Had quite a night at the plate, going 4-for-4 which included a solo home run that was launched over the center field wall. Also delivered a two-run double down the left field line later in the game. Holland shows present bat speed from the right side and looks to attack the baseball out in front. Uncommitted bat that can make an impact, drive in runs that should be followed this summer.

2021 SS Ethan Campbell (Mosley HS, FL)
Jacksonville commit. Athletic frame with some physicality throughout. Stood out offensively on the night when he hammered a ball to deep center field for a two-run double during one of hit at-bats. Fast hands, drives the ball with intent and makes loud, hard contact.

2024 LHP Matt Hoag (Ponte Vedra HS, FL)
Duke commit. Tall, projectable frame at 6-foot-3, 175 pounds with plenty of room to still fill out. Loose, quick arm. Came in for relief where he sat 85-86 mph with his fastball, touching 87 with run. Worked down in the zone. Also flashed a 71-73 mph curveball that generated some swings and misses. At times he can fall off the side, when he stays balanced he shows a better command of the zone. Lots of upside with Hoag moving forward and will continue to be a strong follow.
